Nansemond County was founded in 1646, followed by the founding of Suffolk in 1742. The two merged in 1974 and consolidated themselves and were named City of Suffolk. It’s the largest city in Virginia by square area and the 14th largest city in the country. One of its claims to fame is Suffolk’s the Birthplace of Mr. Peanut. Suffolk has both the small-town charm and big-city amenities - a rare and pleasing combination.
