Formed as an independent city in 1963 by a merger of the city of South Norfolk and Norfolk county, one of the largest cities in terms of square area in the country, encompassing sections of farmland, wetlands, and forests. Currently, the second-largest city in Virginia, Chesapeake is known for its beautiful waterfront properties that surround the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway.
